Discover Chesterfield's story in the town's museum, located within 1435 Theatre & Museum.
Through themed galleries, displays and interactive experiences, you'll explore the people, places and events that shaped Chesterfield across the centuries.
Objects from the museum's collection reveal the town's growth and the lives of those who made it what it is today. From Roman times to the present day, discover the stories behind Chesterfield's rich heritage through a fascinating range of objects, from everyday items to decorative pieces.
We want everyone to feel welcome. Sensory backpacks are available to borrow during your visit, and free family activity sheets can be collected from the Box Office to help younger visitors explore the museum. We also offer a range of facilities and support for visitors with access needs (Access link unavailable for staff events - please contact the box office if you have any access enquiries).
Coming December 2026: One of the first exhibitions in our Special Exhibitions Gallery celebrates the work of local artist Joseph Syddall. Discover a remarkable collection of sketches and paintings, and learn more about one of Chesterfield's most significant artists.
