This walk includes sights of interest relating to three women either buried in Spital Cemetery or who had connections with Spital (Blanche Eastwood, Violet Markham and Mary Swanwick).
Leaving the Cemetery, we will follow the old mining track to the town’s original municipal golf course, first passing Brambling Cottage (once the home of Blanche Eastwood). We will then return to town through the golf course, taking in the Markham grave memorial, the site of the former Markham works with its “Snail Turbine” sculpture, the former site of the Eastwood Wagon Works. We will briefly visit the 17th century Unitarian Chapel at Elder Yard where Mary Swanwick worshipped.
A couple of points of further interest relating to two suffragettes will be pointed out along the way. We will conclude the walk with an offer of refreshments and a brief talk about the people buried in the cemetery and the work of the Friends group.
