A walk around Grassmoor Country Park to explore a flood alleviation and wildlife habitat improvement scheme that was completed in November 2022. Hear about some of the history of the site that was once Grassmoor Colliery, see how it has been transformed into a much-loved country park, and discover how DCRT are using nature-friendly ways to capture and slow the flow of storm water through the park to reduce flood risk, protect people, and benefit wildlife.
We will explore 4 different zones in the park that have been created to capture and store rainfall and runoff, reducing pressure on the local river network during heavy rainfall, and completing the circular park route with views over Chesterfield.
We will be on and off path during this walk and it may be muddy/boggy underfoot so appropriate footwear is recommended. There are some slopes on this walk but we will take it steady up and down.
DCRT work to protect and restore rivers in the Don Catchment area. Find out how you and your community can be involved in natural flood management at www.dcrt.org.uk
