The walk starts from Renishaw whose history includes substantial iron working. The Renishaw Iron Works were first built in 1785 by Thomas Appleby mainly producing pig iron for the iron foundry industry. The works continued in one form or another until 1970.
A very easy section along part of the Trans Pennine Trail will bring you to the edge of Killamarsh. Here we join the Cuckoo Way for a short walk to Church Town. Here we turn south for an extensive section of cross and field edge walking to reach the village of High Moor, once a thriving part of the coal industry. Then using more field paths and a section of woodland to skirt a small dam before a gentle climb to the village of Spinkhill dominated by the roman catholic Mount St Mary School. Passing through the school grounds the route now descends gently back to the Chesterfield canal where we use the Cuckoo Way to return to Renishaw.
