Talks programme
There will be authentic period tents and displays between 11am and 4.30pm, with a programme of timed talks offered in the morning, and repeated again in the afternoon:
- 11am - setting the scene, history, Q and A, myths and legends, games (including Hnefatofl, Kubb, Nine Mans Morris, Dice or Knucklebones)
- 11.30am - fashion show (male and female), show and tell, interactive touch and feel
- 12 noon - Viking weapons and armour, chance to handle and try on armour and helmets of the period, and learn about weapons and tactics they used
- 12.30pm - shield competition, interactive - how to form a shield wall and move as a unit, walk-through Battle of Hastings - learn about the battle by being part of it (no fighting involved)
- 1.15pm lunch: authentic foods – what is right for the period, and what isn’t known yet
- 1.45pm - setting the scene, history, Q and A, myths and legends, games (including Hnefatofl, Kubb, Nine Mans Morris, Dice or Knucklebones)
- 2.15pm - fashion show (male and female), show and tell, interactive touch and feel
- 2.45pm - Viking weapons and armour, chance to handle and try on armour and helmets of the period, and learn about weapons and tactics they used
- 3.15pm - shield competition, interactive - how to form a shield wall and move as a unit, walk-through Battle of Hastings - learn about the battle by being part of it (no fighting involved)
- 4pm - closing questions, handling objects, show and tell
Museum on the Move: Vikings
Explore Viking life through this free, interactive exhibition which promises family fun with Viking objects, hands-on activities, dressing up, and crafts.
Discover who the Vikings were, learn about their beliefs and stories and explore every day life as a Viking.
Get hands on with braiding, designing a Thor amulet and making a wrist torc or create a message with Viking Runes, make a Viking buzz bone toy or try our Viking words quiz. There really is plenty to have a go at.
Outside, you will be able to meet re-enactors from Cestrefeld Vikings and discover how they lived. Learn about the history of the Vikings and the myths and legends that surrounded them.
Explore the games they would have played, including Hnefatofl, Kubb, Nine Mans Morris, Dice or Knucklebones and the male and female fashion of the Viking era.
Find out how Vikings were equipped with chances to handle and try on armour and helmets of the period and learn about the various weapons and tactics used.
Discover authentic foods from the Viking period and where they came from.
Learn how to form a shield wall and move as a unit and take part in a walk-through battle re-enacting the Battle of Hastings.
Duckmanton Primary School are also holding their school fayre with stalls, crafts, refreshments and games so there will be lots to see and do for all the family!
We recommend that all children are accompanied by a responsible adult.
