A short walk around Brampton highlighting the sites of the long-gone industries
You might know about the many potteries and Robinsons, but what about the bleachworks, red lead works, the coal and iron pits, chemical works, corn mill, candlewick, iron foundries, brass works, bobbin mill, go-kart works - and even the Beaver Hat factory!
So many innovative industries grew up powered by water wheels along the River Hipper through Brampton from 1700 and earlier. You now need imagination and someone to show you where they all were, and to see the relicts that remain. Do you know where the five mill ponds were? Do you know where Dr Goodfellow made his pottery iodine infusers to hang around the necks of children to protect them from the ravages of Flu?
There are two listed mill buildings to ponder (why does Chesterfield have so few listed buildings?). We can see the tram shed that fed the line running up to the Terminus, and we’ll show you where the tracks of the old “Brampton Branch” railway line ran along serving these industries from 1870 til its demise.
Simply bring your imagination, and we’ll tell you the history, show you what had been where!
